My New Normal

Time to say goodbye to all the Christmas candy, cookies and fudge. I can't look at them anymore and if I see them I will slowly eat them all little by little.

Also, time to say goodbye to all the Christmas decorations. I have been putting this off and putting it off. I can think of a million and one things I would rather do. I do know that I will be happy when they are all put away and things feel less cluttered.

As the new year begins, I have come to realize that the word resolution is not in my vocabulary. I have taken it out because it never works for me. I will say, however that I am implementing a new normal. I know...a little play on semantics, however it is changing my perspective.

My new normal includes a healthier life style of eating healthy and exercising. Boy, this is a popular one this time of year!

As far as my new normal for gardening...well, 2012 brings forth a new perspective to anticipate the endless possibilities for my garden. About this time every year I take notice of my garden and think about what it will look like this spring. Right now, I kind of panic a little inside at its appearance. Then, I have to remind myself that it will return with beauty. A fresh, new beginning for spring is what I am looking forward to and thinking about new plants, garden art, rocks, etc. Also, I love to see what flowers are around the old neighborhoods in Austin and I love growing these old fashioned flowers from seeds. So, I am looking forward to doing a little research and putting together my list of seeds to gather.

In addition, another new normal is to always wear sunscreen, my gardening hat and sunglasses for protection from the sun. I know how important this is, so I just need to do it!

Lastly, I will continue to learn as much as I can about gardening and landscape design. I am thankful that I have found something I love and I just can't get enough!

Okay....time to put away those Christmas decorations. Oh, wait..Dr. Phil is on.

Wishing you health and happiness in 2012!

Good luck with your resolutions, Amy!

Here in our country, tradition dictates that the Christmas decorations stay up until the Feast of the Three Kings which falls on the second Sunday of the New Year. Not a single person has put away the decor yet but everything comes down this Sunday evening.

Great resolutions. I am a big fan of hats in the garden and whenever I am outside. I agree it is fun to check out what grows well in the neighborhood.
Happy 2012.

I can so relate. I'm trying to prepare healthier meals lately. Continuing to learn about gardening and landscape design is one of my resolutions as well.

Go for hats in the garden!!! Instant sunscreen.
It is sad to take down all the lights and decorations but I do feel lighter with out the extra. It's a nice push to get back on the right eating track too. I'm working on getting back on track and hope to start the garden dreaming/planning full time soon.
Looking forward to watching your garden grow in 2012.

I have eaten the last of the Christmas goodies and our tree is still up. I might tackle that this weekend. I like your new normal for 2012! My only issue with hats is that I can't stand to wear them when it is really hot even though I know that is when I should wear it most. Happy New Year Amy! I look forward to reading more about your garden this year.

I could never have a basket of candy like that in my house -- I would eat it in no time flat. I have no control when it comes to chocolate. I sometimes have my husband hide it and then ask him to bring out just a couple pieces at a time. Silly, but it works. I'm pretty good about sunscreen, but not so much on hats and sunglasses. I don't like to look at flowers through sunglasses, but I'm afraid someday I will regret that. I know somebody who basically got a sunburn on his eyes -- yeeouch. Granted it was off the glare from snow, but sometimes if I'm walking across a concrete parking lot in the summer the glare is painful. As much as I stare at this computer screen sometimes, I wonder if I need sunglasses for it :-) Ha! Try 15 minutes at a time working on the decorations. Might not seem as overwhelming if you do it in small chunks :-) Set a timer and see how much you can get done. It is a amazing what you can get done when you're trying to beat the clock.

Hi Amy - I like your "New Normal" ideas. I've set a few goals this year myself - lose weight, get organized and blog more. So far so good. The tree is down but the cookies are still in the freezer - need to get down there today and get rid of them before the cookie monster in me surfaces again.

A hat and sunscreen are definitely part of the "new normal" for me. The Texas sun has convinced me that the two are essential for working in the garden and hanging on to my girlish complexion :)

My tree is still up because the hubby and I keep finding other things we'd rather do, like ordering plants. :o) I wear a super enormous teen-age daughter horrifying hat when I garden but ofen forget the sunscreen. I need to make that my new normal, too. Not forgetting, but remembering!

I share many of your intentions for the "new normal". I still need to get my Christmas tree down, though!

Amy, I didn't get all my Christmas decorations taken down and put away until this week. My mother always insisted in waiting until after Jan. 6 to take advantage of the full 12 days of Christmas, but I was quite a few days beyond that. Happy New (Normal) Year to you! -Jean

Great post until you got to the Dr. Phil part. I'd rather eat glass than watch him. LOL

I got my Christmas decorations put away yesterday. It was all I could do. I was seriously starting to worry about the tree being a fire hazard.

Happy 2012 Amy. It's going to be a super year.

Happy New Year, Amy :)

Thanks for remembering the moon flower seeds, you're a sweetie. Let's do a little garden walk soon - Maybe we can give each other some ideas for winter/spring gardening!
